ABOUT THE ARTWORK:

Janet Strayer's artwork is dedicated to the imagination. Balancing objective and subjective, her works convey the mixed realities of observation, memory, and expressive imaginings. She draws upon an impressive stylistic range (from classical representation to playful invention), using whatever fits best for any given series of works. The human figure is a central fascination, and animism infuses her work. We see lyrical and dramatic moments of transformation -- the surprises, delights, struggles, and curiosities of being alive.

This website presents a full portfolio of Strayer's art: Paintings (acrylics. oils, mixed media), Drawings (graphite, ink, charcoal), traditional Printmaking (etching, drypoint, linocuts), and contemporary Digital image-making. Also included are 3-dimensional works using clay, natural and found objects, and an illustrated book.

"I hope to communicate the interrelatedness of the inner and outer worlds we inhabit, their richness, variety, and wonder across different styles and media." -- Janet Strayer

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Janet Strayer is a US-Canadian citizen who lives in Vancouver and Saturna Island, B.C., where her Insights Studio is located. Born in Germany, she grew up in New York City, graduated from Barnard College, and received an international Fulbright award. In addition to a stimulating career as a university professor, author of psychology articles, and researcher in human development, she studied art history and trained as a painter and printmaker. She has lived, worked, and traveled extensively in different regions of the world, experiences that find their way into her art.

In 2009 she began a fulltime career in visual art, becoming an active member of national and local art associations and showing her artwork publically. Her art has won awards in juried competitions, appeared in books and media, and is collected internationally by enthusiastic art lovers.

"My artistic vision owes much to my cross-cultural roots and extensive travels, my love of experiment and learning in the sciences, literature, and the arts. My art is also influenced by my personal inclinations as a humanist who is much affected by the imperfect beauty and contradictions of being human and alive to the worlds within and around us." -- Janet Strayer
