ABOUT THE ARTWORK:

Janet Strayer's artwork is dedicated to the imagination: the filter through which the multiple realities of observation, memory and experience are distilled. Balancing objective and subjective, she displays a range of different styles, from playful and abstract-expressive to more classical, representational modes. An inherent animism infuses her depictions, with the human figure a central fascination. The emphasis across her diverse works tends to be on moments of transformation: conceptual, physical, and emotional. Her works convey a lyrical responsiveness to changing realities, moods, and ideas -- the surprises, struggles, delights, and curiosities of being alive.

An assortment of methods and media are used: painting (acrylics and oils), drawing (graphite, ink, charcoal), pastels, traditional printmaking (etching, drypoint, linocuts), and modern digital image-making. Also included are  mixed media and three-dimensional works using clay, natural and found objects.

"I hope to communicate the interrelatedness of the inner and outer worlds we inhabit, their richness, variety, and wonder across different styles and media." -- Janet Strayer

"My artistic vision owes much to my cross-cultural roots and extensive travels, my education and love of experiment and learning in the sciences, literature, and the arts. My art is also influenced by my personal inclinations as a humanist who is much affected by the imperfect beauty and contradictions of being human and alive to the worlds within and around us." -- Janet Strayer
