Intaglio
Intaglio is an ancient method of incising a surface (copper, in traditional etchings), inking it, and pressing the inked surface onto another absorbent surface, such as paper. The incisions are made by the artist's stylus alone (called drypoint) or with the aid of acids and resist-grounds (etchings). Incisions made into wood or linoleum surfaces (linocuts) are also means for intaglio. More recently, photo-based techniques have been incorporated into traditional resist-methods. Monotypes combine intaglio methods and painting.
